VW Bro Derek William Barr, MBE, PGSwdB, PDepProvGM

VW Bro. Derek William Barr was initiated into Old Palace Lodge No.7173 on 8th October 1975.

Over the years thereafter, he became a joining member of East Surrey Masters Lodge, Honeywood Lodge, South Surrey Masters Lodge, Castlemartyr Lodge and was a founding member of British Forces Foundation Lodge.

He was also a very active member of Croydon Millenary Chapter, East Surrey First Principals Chapter, Wimbledon Chapter (now erased) and Castlemartyr Chapter.

In 1990 he received his first appointment to the acting rank of Provincial Junior Grand Deacon. Other promotions soon followed, and in 1998 he became an Official Visitor and was promoted to PPJGW.

In 2001, he was appointed Assistant Provincial Grand Master and received Grand Rank the following year when he was invested as Past Senior Grand Deacon. He served as an Assistant Provincial Grand Master for eleven years until 2012 when he was selected to be the Deputy Provincial Grand Master and was promoted in Grand Rank as Past Grand Sword Bearer in 2013.

Porchway Lodge sits within the St Thomas Group, which VW Derek Barr conscientiously headed the Group in his capacity as Assistant Provincial Grand Master.

He served this Province with distinction as Deputy Provincial Grand Master until 2017.

Before retirement from business, he was employed for 40 years at the Fairfield Halls in Croydon. He mixed with many stars from the music and acting professions and was engaged in many charitable functions, the Fairfield Halls being a registered charity.

He retired as the Chief Executive in 2010 and was awarded an MBE in the Queen’s birthday honours the same year, for his services to music and the arts.

VW Bro Derek Barr served his Lodges, his Chapters and this Province with distinction over many years and worked tirelessly to promote the Province of Surrey and Freemasonry generally.

Many will remember fondly, our Lodge on achieving the Gold award for the last Festival, secured a hugely unique visit from the Provincial Executive who took all offices within the Lodge and conducted a ceremony of Initiation.

Derek is survived by his wife Sandra and his two children and three grandchildren. His widow lives in Coulsdon.

VW.Bro Derek has laid down his mortal working tools for the last time and has ascended Jacob’s’ ladder to join the Great Architect in the Grand Lodge above and is now at eternal rest in the company of the host of Angels and his Brothers blessed.

Whilst he will be sadly missed in within body kirk of our Lodge and more widely across the Province, he is not forgotten as his memory lives on within the pages of our website for all to cherish.
